Show: May 21st through June 3rd, 2005, daily 10am – 9pm

New Seoul Plaza, Lower Level

Jungle Book Art Gallery, ILSAN, S. Korea

This show is historic.  There has never been a family where the tradition of being an artist has been passed from mother to daughter for four generations.  Their work is as diverse as any group of artists, but their dedication and passion is shared.  From the wild untamed American West of the 1800s to today, these women have been pioneers.  This is a rare opportunity for this is the first time the Thompson-Genn-Toffey artists have had a show together.

This show is historic.  There has never been a family where the tradition of being an artist has been passed from mother to daughter for four generations.  Their work is as diverse as any group of artists, but their dedication and passion is shared.  From the wild untamed American West of the 1800s to today, these women have been pioneers.  This is a rare opportunity for this is the first time the Thompson-Genn-Toffey artists have shown together.

These artists have a history of over 100 years.  Ruth Thompson/Whitehouse, born in San Francisco in 1896, was a professional painter and ecologist who traveled to New York City yearly to see the museums and galleries.  When she moved to Spokane, Washington, local art critics wrote about this 'new talented young artist' on the scene, she was then 65 years old.  She continued to paint till she died at age 97.

Her daughter Nancy Genn decided she wanted to be an artist at age 5.  Her work is in many museums and galleries internationally.  She is a painter, sculpture (cast bronze), and papermaker.  Her largest cast bronze sculpture at Cowell College, Santa Cruz, California won the AIA award in 1966.  It weighs over one ton.

Genn's daughter, Cynthia Toffey is a painter.  She started blowing glass in New York City in 1979.  Her paintings are shown internationally, especially her "Great Women of the Past" series she started in 1994.  Both her girls are artists.  Akina R. Toffey had organized 3 solo shows of her paintings before the age of 18.  Kyra J. Toffey's favorite focus is sculpting art out of hot glass.

Ruth W.T. Whitehouse died in her native California in 1993.  Nancy T. Genn's home and studio are in Berkeley, California.  The Toffey family moved from New York to Korea in December 2000.
